The Various Infertility Procedures

When a couple decides to have a child, the excitement is truly palpable. They begin trying, and some couples get pregnant right away. However, for other couples who have been trying to get pregnant for some time, they begin to realize that they might need help from professionals.

Thus, couples who are having conception problems will need to turn to a variety of different infertility procedures. The one that they choose will all have to do with the physical reasons regarding why they could not conceive naturally. To this end, before any of the various infertility procedures can be done, both the male and the female need to be thoroughly tested.

What does this mean? The male will be first to be tested, because the tests done on him will be less invasive than the ones that would need to be done on the female. There are several ways that a man can be tested to see if he has reproductive issues, but the most common ways is for him to give a sperm sample.

From there, the sperm count will be tested to see if the male's sperm count is within the normal levels needed for successful conception. Sometimes couples are not able to conceive because the male's sperm count is low. Or, the male's sperm might be weak or malformed, so that it has trouble meeting the egg in the fallopian tubes in the first place.

In such a scenario, one of the infertility procedures that a couple can choose to have is artificial insemination. Provided that the male's sperm is formed correctly, he will give samples, which will then be medically inserted directly into the woman, so that the chances of an egg being fertilized are much greater. Prior to this happening, however, the female will most likely be given fertility drugs to prepare her womb and enable her to get pregnant sooner rather than later.

Another one of the infertility procedures that the couple might be able to choose as an option is in vitro fertilization. In this case, the sperm and the egg are fertilized in a laboratory setting, and are then implanted into the woman's uterus in the hopes that the egg will attach itself to the wall of the uterus, thereby initiating a pregnancy.

These procedures can also be done if the woman is having trouble conceiving, however, in vitro fertilization would probably be selected ahead of artificial insemination. Another option that the couple has the option of trying is surrogacy. This is done usually when it has been found that the woman is physically unable to carry a baby to term.

Whatever process that the couple chooses to do, it is important that they have patience. Sometimes it takes several rounds of any of these respective procedures before a pregnancy is established. For example, in the case of in vitro fertilization, several eggs will be fertilized, and if any are unused, the couple as the change of freezing them until they wish to try to get pregnant again.
