Tazorac Information

Tazarotene (Tazorac) is a prescription topical retinoid sold as a cream or gel. This latest vitamin A derived product has been approved for the treatment of psoriasis and acne. Its effects on the skin have led the cosmetic physicians to also use it to treat sun damaged skin.

Tazorac is available as a topical cream in two concentration strengths (0.05% and 0.1%)

The skin must be gently washed with soap and the cream is applied once a day on the target area until the lesion disappears.

The drug is not without side effects. The most common complaints about Tazorac are

- dry skin

- worsening of the acne

- itching

- redness

- peeling of the skin

- cracking of the skin

- sun sensitivity

These side effects are usually observed after prolonged use of Tazorac. Even though the side effects are unpleasant, they are mild and disappear once the drug use has been stopped.

Tazorac has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of blackheads acne, mild psoriasis and sun damaged skin.

The drug can be used with other oral medications for the treatment of acne or psoriasis. Most individuals need to use the drug for at least 6-8 weeks before a response is seen.

Tazorac has been shown to decrease the cell proliferation and reduce the inflammation. The mild skin peeling agent also helps to unclog pores and rids the skin of excess oil

To decrease the side effects of the drug, one can

- use the product in combination with a skin moisturizer

- use the drug every other day

- limit the amount of time the skin is contact with the drug

- avoid the sun or wear sunscreens when going out

- stop the use of harsh soaps and detergents on the body

Tazorac should be avoided in all females who want to get pregnant or those who are pregnant.
