Spider Vein Treatment Options

Spider veins are tiny, fine veins that appear just beneath the surface of the skin. Although these small veins are linked to your larger venous system, they are not a crucial part of it. Laser treatment of spider veins is a viable option that will assist you in eliminating these unsightly veins.

Spider veins have one of three basic designs:

1. A true spider shape with a group of veins radiating outward from a dark central point.

2. A pattern that looks like tiny branch-like shapes.

3. They may appear linear - thin separate lines or like sunburst or cartwheel. Linear spider veins are most often found on the inner knee and the outer thigh for a sunburst or cartwheel distribution.

Endovenus laser treatment uses the sophisticated expertise of lasers for the treatment of spider veins and deeper, reticular veins. This procedure can be performed fairly easily right in the cosmetic surgeon's office. Lasers are exceptionally safe and successful on leg veins, as well as veins that are discernible on the face, neck, and chest. The applications cause very few side effects and you can continue your regular activities immediately following the procedure.

After Treatment

Following the procedure you can drive yourself home, you can resume your regular activities and will be encouraged to walk. You should wear support hosiery or compression wraps to shield the treated vessels. Following your procedure, it's recommended that you do not take aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory medications for at least 48 hours. Tylenol may be used if needed. In addition, you should not take hot baths or sit in a whirlpool or sauna, nor apply hot compresses or any form of heat to the injected areas for 48 hours after treatment. You should also stay away from direct exposure to sunlight, sun bathing and tanning beds, jogging, high-impact aerobics and swimming for 1-2 weeks following treatment.

In most cases there are no side effects, but swelling and minimal bruising can happen. Due to only mild pain connected with the procedure, usual activities may be resumed immediately. It is also recommended that you limit sun exposure to minimize the risk of complications.
