Side Effects of Breast Lift Surgery

Once the mastopexy is completed, the breast area is wrapped in soft gauze and a compression bandage. This will help limit the swelling, pain and discomfort for the next few days. The pain is easily controlled with prescription pain medications.
The bruising and swelling usually dissipate over the next 1-2 weeks.
A noticeable side effect of mastopexy is the loss of sensation around the nipple area. In some cases the numbness may last a few months and in some individuals it may be permanent.
All women who undergo a breast lft must refrain from heavy exercise or sporting activities for at least 4-6 weeks.
Normal daily living activities can be resumed in a week, but lifting, pushing or pulling should be avoided until the incision has completely healed.
Sexual intercourse and aggressive foreplay with the breast is a definite NONO for at least 7-10 days.
Most individuals can return back to work in 7-10 days
Like any surgery, breast lift is also associated with a certain number of complications. Even though complications are rare, they do occur. The minor side effects of the surgery include:
- bruising
- mild bleeding
- swelling
- pain
- blood clots in the legs
- risks of anesthesia
- infection
- Re-operative surgery to control bleeding
These mild side effects usually disappear over the first week. The pain is easily controlled with pain medications.
Complications that can occur include:
- Asymmetry of the breasts
- permanent numbness around the nipple area
- formation of dark scars or keloids
- uneven position of the nipple
- discoloration of the surrounding areola and nipple
- pain
The risks of complications and side effects are slightly increased when the breast lift is combined with an implant procedure.
Breast lift surgery does not interfere with breast feeding, nevertheless, it is recommended that one complete the pregnancy and then wait a few months before having the surgery.
Breast lift surgery prior to a pregnancy may be ruined by the excess weight gain.
The average costs of breast lift surgery are variable and depend on the type of procedure. On average, breast lift surgery costs anywhere from 4000-6000. The costs are considerably higher when breast implant surgery is combined with a breast lift.
