Samsung Electronics has begun mass producing a more economical line of its digital information displays (DIDs) for indoor applications, where 24/7 use isn't necessary.

Aimed at retail, food outlets, schools, museums, and other locales, Samsung said its new Basic Digital Information Displays (B-DIDs) will broaden the market considerably for digital displays worldwide.

"Outlets that do not require around-the-close use of digital information displays can now get the quality of a high-grade promotional or advertising display, at a highly affordable price," said Scott Birnbaum, vice president of Samsung Digital Solutions' LCD group, in a statement. "More and more companies are realizing that digital information displays are not simply TVs in a commercialized venue, but rather advanced electronic signage needed by smaller businesses and chain stores where limited usage is required."

Samsung's new low-end LCD line is reportedly cost-competitive with consumer televisions but is designed specifically for commercial applications. Unlike traditional TVs, the displays are designed to be mounted in either landscape or portrait configurations. The new line is available in 32-, 40-, 46-, and 52-inch models, and comes with an 18-month warranty.

Featuring a contrast ratio between 3,000:1 and 4,000:1, the new line includes technology to improve heat management and make the displays more reliable for extended use, according to the company.
