The lips can be injected with collagen or fat.
Both collagen and fat only produce temporary lip augmentation . The results may last anywhere from 3-12 months.
Lip augmentation is generally done with injections of collage or fat. In most cases, one session is sufficient to produce the desired results. To maintain the lip augmentation, repeat sessions will be required 1-2 times a year.
Lip augmentation with newer materials like Alloderm and SoftForm produce a much longer lasting result
Lip injection is not difficult but proper placement of the dermal filler is important.
There are some dermal fillers which can not be injected. AlloDerm, a natural collagen sheet made from donated skin, can only be inserted from small incisions made on the inside corner of the mouth. Over time, the AlloDerm implant integrates into the surrounding tissue and does not migrate.
Other dermal fillers frequently used to augment lips include:
- Autologen
- Dermalogen
- Fascia
- Hylaform
- Radiance
- Restylane
- Juvederm
Lip augmentation is an outpatient procedure. The surgery may take anywhere from 30 -90 minutes.
The recovery period after most lips augmentation is about 7-10 days
Lip implants like AlloDerm ,is natural human tissue and is rarely rejected by the body
Permanent lip augmentation can be performed with Gore-Tex. The prosthesis is well tolerated with minimal complications
Individuals who are not committed to a permanent implant should first try lip augmentation with a hyaluronic acid derivate to determine what it feels like.
Possible complications of lip implants include:
- bleeding
- asymmetry
- migration
- pain
- extrusion of the implant
- infection
Individuals who have allergy to collagen or the local anesthetic should not undergo lip augmentation
Despite the fact that lip augmentation is a fine art and widely practiced, the results are unpredictable. Not all individuals have the desired result and rarely some lumpiness and unevenness may occur
Collagen injections last from 2-6 months whereas fat injections provide longer-lasting results. However, the results of fat injections are sometimes unpredictable- both lumping and/or scarring effects have been known to occur
