IUI Procedure

The IUI(Intrauterine Insemination) procedure is a procedure used to help people who have been unable to conceive on their own become pregnant. IUI procedure is one of the more cost effective fertility treatments available.

What is IUI?

IUI is performed by threading a very thin flexible catheter through the cervix and injecting washed sperm directly into the uterus.  This process usually takes 2-3 minutes and is relatively painless.

The purpose of the IUI procedure is to stimulate two to three follicles to produce eggs.  Sometimes this process can be done naturally, but sometimes a person might need to take hormones to help the process along.

It is important to note that leading up to the IUI procedure, some monitoring is required.  Blood tests are needed to monitor hormone levels.  Ultrasounds are used to monitor how many follicles are being stimulated, one of the risks of IUI is that too many follicles will be stimulated.  If this is the case, usually the cycle will be terminated to reduce the risk of multiples.

Once a woman has the right amount of follicles and it is confirmed by ultrasound that she is ovulating, then the sperm is introduced.  About two weeks later there is either another ultrasound or blood test to confirm pregnancy.

If you are interested in learning more about the IUI procedure, the tests involved, or whether it is the treatment for you, you may want to schedule an appointment with a fertility doctor in your area today.
