Tandberg announced Movi, a mobile client that the company says will make high-performance videoconferencing possible on laptops and other PCs. Organizations that currently run Tandberg's Management Suite and Video Communication Server can add Movi functionality and deploy the SIP clients to their mobile users.
"With Movi, there are no boundaries to where business can take place. Everyone in an organization can stay visually connected at all times," said Fredrik Halvorsen, CEO of Tandberg, in a statement.
Tandberg officials told PRO AV that Movi licenses could come out to as little as $93 per registration, based on 2,000 users. On the server side, Movi is a free software update for TCS and VCS customers who currently have a maintenance contract.
Once deployed, the Movi client looks like any end point on the network and can join any standards-compliant videoconference. Officials said it works with any USB Web camera, but clearly the better the camera, the better the experience. Eventually, Movi will support 720p/30fps on a mobile PC. Tandberg's own 720p/30 Web camera, the PrecisionHD, is due out in the second quarter.
"There have been PC-based videoconferencing solutions for some time," Mike Roussey, Tandberg's marketing manager of infrastructure products, told PRO AV. "What's been missing has been bandwidth management, ease of deployment, and authentication."
