Job Definition

It is the responsibility of the washer to clean and prepare new, used and serviced vehicles. Automotive washers keep vehicles clean and inform the detailer foreman of defects the vehicle may have.

As with all positions within dealerships, automotive washers are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.

Job Duties

The duties of an automotive washer include:

  • Washing and waxing the exterior of the vehicle, including adding a treatment to the tires.
  • Vacuuming and cleaning the upholstery and other surfaces on the interior.
  • Inspecting vehicles for noticeable defects and informing the detailer foreman of these issues.
  • Notifying detailer foreman of missing or defective small parts.

Job Requirements

A washer should have basic knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance. Washers should have good judgment and the ability to use hand and power tools and other machinery safely.

Good cleaning skills and the ability to follow instructions are important. Some cleaning products may be quite toxic, so washers should have a good understanding about how to use these correctly and safely. Being well-organized and able to manage time, as well as having an eye for detail, is advantageous.

A valid driver's license and a good driving record is a requirement for this position.

People working within the automotive retail industry often have to work extended hours, evenings and weekends to achieve their goals.

Education Requirements

A high school diploma or equivalent is recommended for this position. There is on-the-job training.

Automotive washers can train with the detailer foreman to become a detailer.

Salary Range

The average annual earnings of automotive washers are approximately $20,000 to $30,000. Earnings vary depending on experience, and the dealer's geographic location and size.
