Acne Scarring

Acne is caused by factors including hormonal changes, certain medications, and the use of certain products. Acne can lead to acne scarring .

Here are skin-care suggestions to help reduce acne, courtesy of the U.S. National Library of Medicine:

• Wash your face once or twice a day with a gentle, mild soap or cleanser that won't dry the skin. Always wash your face after sweating or exercising, but don't wash excessively or more than a few times a day.

• Wash your hair with shampoo each day, particularly if you have oily hair.

• Keep oily hair pulled back and away from your face.

• Don't touch your face with your hands or fingers.

• Don't pick at, scratch or pop any blemishes, as this can cause infection and scarring.

• Avoid any makeup or face creams that are greasy or oily.

While acne is commonly attributed to poor diet and skin care, this and other types of problem skin are often triggered by factors beyond a person's control.

Types of Treatment for Acne Scarring

• Dermabrasion - which removes the outer layers of the skin to produce an improved appearance

• Laser Resurfacing - which destroys the outer layers of the skin

• Subcision - local anesthesia is applied, then a needle is inserted under the skin and moved gently back and forth to release the scar tissue

• Fillers - improve the appearance of acne scars by flattening the scar, but they are temporary

• Chemical peels - use chemical to resurface the skin and improve the appearance of the face and acne scar

• Topical medications - that include bleaching the acne scars
